The history of the Rolex Sea-Dweller
A “wristwatch for conquering the deep” – that’s how Rolex describes the Sea-Dweller. A look at the black dial of the watch shows that this is not an understatement. The diving watch is waterproof down to a depth of 1220 meters (4000 feet). This means that the Sea-Dweller is only surpassed internally by the similar Deepsea (3900 meters maximum diving depth) and makes other Swiss diving watches look old.
The first Rolex Sea-Dweller (at that time with the reference 1665) came onto the market in 1967. Its introduction followed Rolex’s invention of the helium valve in collaboration with the French diving company Comex. The helium valve enabled significantly greater diving depths. Visually and historically, the Sea-Dweller is a descendant of Rolex’s most famous diving watch, the Submariner. My test watch today with the reference number 126600 comes from 2019 and belongs to the latest generation of the Rolex Sea-Dweller, which was released for the 50th anniversary in 2017. Since its market launch four years ago, the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 Single Red has featured three major innovations. On the one hand, Rolex is printing the name in red on the dial again, which also explains the addition to the name. In addition, the certified chronometer has received Rolex’s typical cyclops magnifying glass at 3 o’clock for the first time. The most visually striking change concerns the case dimensions, which have now increased by 3 to 43 millimeters – a real cut in the history of the Sea-Dweller.
